T-Mobile Data Breach: Millions of T-Mobile customers affected by the company’s massive 2021 data breach are finally on track to receive compensation—though it’s taken a while, and the process isn’t exactly straightforward. After hackers compromised the personal data of around 76 million users, T-Mobile reached a $350 million settlement in 2023—marking one of the largest payouts in U.S. telecom history. To make amends, T-Mobile created a settlement fund offering three different ways for impacted customers to receive compensation.
Three Payment Methods You Can Choose From
Whether you suffered financial losses, wasted time, or just want your slice of the settlement, here’s what’s available:
- Documented Losses
- If you experienced out-of-pocket costs tied to the breach—like identity theft recovery, fraud-related charges, or legal fees—you can claim up to $25,000 in reimbursement (proof required).
- Time Spent Dealing with the Breach
- If you spent time handling issues caused by the breach, you may qualify for $25 per hour, up to 15 hours—a possible $375 payout.
- Flat-Rate Cash Payment
- Even without documentation, you may still be eligible for a one-time cash payment of $25 to $100, depending on your location.
T-Mobile Data Breach Revamped Approach to Cybersecurity
Following the breach, T-Mobile committed an additional $150 million to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure through the end of 2023.“Customers are first in everything we do and protecting their information is a top priority,” the company stated. Over the past year, we have significantly strengthened our comprehensive cybersecurity program in response.”
When Will You Get Paid?
Payments start in April 2025.
The first checks will go to customers who filed for reimbursement of documented losses (up to $25,000). Other payouts, including time and flat-rate payments, will roll out afterward.
