Choose OPS as Pension Option: For central government employees, the government has prepared a uniform new pension system under which all employees are being covered. The name of this new pension system is the national pension system, which has been considered applicable across the country since 2004. This NPS applies across the country. The Old Pension Scheme was removed. In such a situation, after the continuous protest of the employees, a circular was finally issued by the Pension Layer Welfare Department on 25 October 2024 in which it was clarified that some central government employees can still get the benefit of the old pension scheme as per their convenience.

According to this circular issued by the Department of Pension and Pension Layers Welfare on 25 October 2024, under certain circumstances, the employees of the Central Government can get the benefit of the old pension scheme under which employees have to follow some rules. OPS cover is provided to employees under the National Pension System only after receiving the filled form keeping in mind all these circumstances.

Which employees can be included in OPS?

A circular was issued by the Department of Pension and Pension Enduring Welfare on 25 October 2024 in which it was clarified that all central employees under the 10th rule under the Central Civil Services Rules of the National Pension System could get the benefit of OPS. However, its selection has been left to employees. That is, if the employee wants, he can choose OPS or he can get the cover of NPS only.

 For the information of the readers, under this rule, it has been clearly stated that such employees who die during their tenure or people who become disabled during service tenure can be given the benefit of OPS or their family.

If this rule is explained in easy language, this rule clearly states that employees appointed after January 1, 2004, who have been included under NPS can opt for the option to get the benefit of OPS or NPS.  In which it is mandatory to follow Rule 10 of the Central Services Rules 2021. That is, the employees will have to clarify while choosing a pension scheme that if the employee gets death due to some reason while working, or he is unable to work due to health problems or becomes disabled due to some reason and is expelled from the job, in such a situation, the employees and the family should get the benefit of the OPS so that they should get face the financial difficulty in near future.

Along with this, all employees who want to choose the benefit of ops if they want to choose the benefit of OPS when they are excluded from service under the national pension system as per Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services Rules 2021, will have to use the option given in Form 1 to get benefits under the rule. That is, the candidate has to choose this rule mentioned in Form 1 so that they are included in OPS under specific circumstances. Along with this, each government employee will have to fill all their family details in Form 1 as well as in Form 2 and submit both forms to the pension department.

If an employee belongs to NPS and wants to get the benefit of this rule of OPS but, according to the given guidelines, does not submit the details in Form 1 and Form 2, then the employees may have to face the following results.

Where only NPS is given the benefit of NPS for not depositing pension option form 1. Meaning such employees are not considered eligible for ops in specific circumstances.

 At the same time, even after the death of the employee, the family members do not get the benefit of OPS for not depositing Form 2.

What are the benefits of OPS to central government employees?

Central government employees are given many benefits as compared to NPS under OPS.
