The government is exploring a new approach called the barrier-less tolling system based on ANPR-FASTag. ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognitiona system that can identify a vehicle by reading its number plate.The existing FASTTag configuration is put together with this system. Cars won’t have to stop at toll booths once it’s in place.
This eliminates the need for cars to stop at toll booths and charges them based on their identity using FASTag Readers and high-performance ANPR cameras. According to the ministry, non-compliance will result in the delivery of e-notices to the offenders, refusal to pay which can lead to the suspension of FASTag and other penalties linked to VAHAN.NHAI is requesting an offer to install the “ANPR-Fastag-based Less Tolling system” located on a certain toll plazas. Decisions regarding the nationwide implementation of this system will be based on its effectiveness, efficiency and user response.
It is worth noting that the government has so far invited offers to install the system at certain toll points. The decision to equip nationwide is based on how well it works and what the public thinks. Additionally, car owners may receive e-notices and are assumed to be able to stop the deliciousness if they refuse to participate in this system or create a discrepancy in the toll payments.

This is intended to clarify that both the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Roads and Transport have decided on the national rollout of satellite-based tolling starting on May 1, 2025.” With no planned state-wide adoption as of yet, a new hybrid tolling system known as the ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System will instead be tested on certain routes, such as the New Delhi-Mumbai corridor. What is the ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System?
The RFID system (FastTag Radio Identification System) combines a new, superior collection technology called the ANPR-Fastag-based barrier with an automatic camera with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). This hybrid technology eliminates the need to shut down on toll plazas and allows for smooth, barrier-free tolls. The goal is to improve traffic flow in the toll booth/cabin and reduce overload.Noncompliant vehicles will receive e-Notices, and the VAHAN system has the authority to suspend FASTags and levy fines for non-payment. For the implementation of the system at certain sites, the NHAI has already requested bids. However, it’s crucial to remember that this is a restricted study, and there is no statewide deployment planned at this moment.

How It Works:
1. As a vehicle reaches the toll zone, ANPR cameras record the number plate and RFID scanners detect the FASTag on the car.
2.The system supports license plates with FastTag accounts to verify legitimacy.
3. Toll is automatically subtracted from the associated FASTag account if it matches. Then vehicles are not need to slow down the speed and stop.
4.ANPR system records license plates when the car has no fast days or is not fully compensated. The toll can be collected subsequently by post-paid billing or penalty enforcement.
